Photos of my feet (In Palau and Diego Garcia)

Last month (November) I went to Palau for a station upgrade. Earlier this year I went to B.I.O.T. for a maintenance visit of our other site. Both of these islands made my geologist heart skip a beat.

Diego Garcia is an ATOLL. I am not sure I have ever been on an island that was so obviously an atoll. I got a kick out of the coral of indeterminate age covered in moss near our sites.

In Palau the contract between the limestone Rock Islands that look like muffins, and the deep red volcanic soil (that is slicker than snot) makes for an amazing contrast of environment.

So here are some geology-related photos I took. Many of them feature my feet for scale....

The mud sticks to EVERYTHING including tires

rain drops in the mud
... don't ask about the footwear... it is a LONG story
Rock Islands! Look at those cute little muffin top limestone islands!

This will one day be a rock.

Diego Garcia

Softest and whitest sand I have EVER seen
In the areas where the sand has eroded away you can see what is underlying the beach... DEAD CORAL!

gravel on another part of the island
red coral on the beach! I thought the color was amazing

I hope you enjoyed this collection of photos of my feet! :)
