I have been sad about how my geology knowledge has been fading without use... mostly the petrology and mineralogy but I am sure other things have been fading as well.
After thinking about this I came up with an idea for this blog. I am going to read my text books. Now I know that sounds like SO MUCH FUN but think about it. Do we really read our text books while we are in class? Really? I mean we "read them" but do they stick that well? I know I am always stressed and going crazy during classes and I have a feeling that since it was always SHIT this needs to be read by tomorrow a nice calm reread would actually be very helpful.
Now since the move I don't have all my text books here. :( I would love to start with Winter (Petrology) but that one along with Ness is in a box in my storage unit in another state. So I am going to start with what I have. Physical Volcanology.
Because I haven't started this project I am not sure what the blog posts will be about. But I am sure I will get super excited about something and write something incomprehensible in my excitement!
I can't wait to get started!

An interesting idea, and one that I hope you'll enjoy. If you find you need any assistance brushing off the rust, I've been holding Geology Office Hours Google+ Hangouts every Monday and Thursday at 4:00pm CST. You'd certainly be welcome to join the conversation - we usually have a couple of geologists participating.
Good luck!
I have to admit, the Optical Mineralogy by Kerr still taking up space on my shelf is not appealing in the least. I took Optical from a prof who had taken it from Kerr (no lie) and all we did was nasty immersion oils the entire semester. Even though I love thin section work in later courses, Optical still brings a bad taste in my mouth.
Thanks for the support guys! Optical was fun I think just because we focused so much on the physics and theory about what was happening. Making thin sections and IDing minerals still gives me nightmares!
I'll have to see if I can take a break from work and join you guys on Google+ that would be fun!
Oh and sorry it took me a while to get the comments, turns out I was signed into the wrong gmail account... both can write only one can see comments... I might need to fix that....
Great posting idea! I should do something similar with my academic blog. It NEVER gets updated and I need to stop it from dying. Blogging what I'm reading isn't a bad idea.
